In a significant transition move, opener Shubman Gill was on Saturday named captain of the Indian ODI team for the upcoming tour of Australia, replacing senior batter Rohit Sharma at the helm.
Rohit, along with Virat Kohli, has been named in the 15-member squad announced by the BCCI, signalling a gradual shift in leadership without fully sacrificing the experience.
Experienced batters Rohit and Virat Kohli will return to the fold as batters.
Rohit and Kohli haven’t been in action at international level since the ICC Champions Trophy event at the start of the year, but the pair will make their return to international cricket during the three-game ODI series against the Aussies that starts in Perth.
The cricketing greats have retired from T20I and Test cricket within the last 12 months, and will return to action for the much-anticipated three-match ODI series ahead of the next edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at the start of 2027.
