India began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a solid 29-run victory over the USA at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, thanks to captain Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 84. Asked to bat first after USA skipper Monank Patel won the toss, India suffered an early setback as Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck.

Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan provided a brief counter-attack, but Shadley van Schalkwyk’s fiery spell triggered a dramatic collapse, reducing India to 46/4.

India’s troubles deepened when Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya departed, leaving the hosts struggling at 77/6. However, Suryakumar stood tall under pressure, anchoring the innings with a superb knock featuring 10 fours and four sixes. His partnership with Axar Patel helped India reach a fighting total of 161/9.
