Babar Azam’s struggles: Kamran Akmal points out technical flaws

Published

on

Former player and national selector Kamran Akmal has slammed the past and present national team management including captains for showing lack of faith in spinners while playing home Test series.

Akmal said spinners in the country have been systematically sidelined and not given proper chances to show their worth in last three years, in the wake of Pakistan’s 0-2 defeat against Bangladesh at home.

“There is no way we will win a home series without a spinner taking wickets. My observation is that in the last three-four years, the management and captains have not shown patience to develop the spinners,” he told PTI.

Akmal said there were no reasons for sidelining experienced spinners such as Yasir Shah, Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Bilal Asif, Zahid Mahmood or Usman Qadir.

“When Babar (Azam) was captain, he kept some spinners in the squad but never bothered to play them regularly. Unless spinners get constant exposure, how will they come through?” he said.

Akmal pointed out that Pakistan have won matches at home with a combination of both pace and spin in the past.

“Even when we were forced to play in UAE, we won Tests mainly because of our spinners,” he said.

“We don’t have pacers who are as strong as those we had in the past and yet we are expecting them to win us the series. The recent series against Bangladesh is an example.”

“Where is Yasir Shah? Isn’t he still active in first class cricket? Where has Noman Ali gone? Didn’t he take wickets? Did he get punished? He had appendicitis in Australia, got operated on, and was then sidelined.”

“What was Usman Qadir’s fault? What was Sajid Khan’s fault? What was Bilal Asif’s fault? All of them have taken five-wicket hauls and yet are out of the team,” he said.

Akmal said Pakistan batters’ ‘legs start to give way’ against pacers. “Our batters are comfortable against pacers bowling at 130-140 kmph, but when they face a pace of 140 kmph or more, and they see that on the scoreboard during the match, their legs start to give way,” he said.

“See how we struggled against Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed who bowl 140 kmph plus. Look at the way our main batters were dismissed,” he said.

Akmal said players need to prioritise domestic cricket and not focus only on overseas leagues.

“They prefer to go and play in useless foreign leagues to earn money and this is not helping them develop their skills. This lack of commitment towards domestic cricket is leading to inconsistent performances at the international level.”

Kamran said there was nothing wrong with players wanting to earn money from foreign leagues. “But I think as a professional you have to balance your schedule and ensure that while you earn money you also improve yourself as a player for your country,” he added.

Akmal said Babar is struggling for form due to some technical flaws.

“He is unsure of himself and his off-stump early on and has this tendency to leave his leg stump exposed. Balls that should be played towards cover are being played straight, and the bat doesn’t go towards the ball’s direction,” he said.

Champions Trophy 2025: Hardik Pandya in contention for captaincy in place of Rohit Sharma

Published

on

Following a string of underwhelming performances with the bat, Team India captain Rohit Sharma’s rough patch has carried over from the end of 2024 into the start of 2025.

The buzz reached its peak on Thursday when the India captain reportedly “opted out” of the series-deciding Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney.

As Rohit remains silent on his Test future, the uncertainty has prompted the BCCI’s selection committee to explore alternative leadership options ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.

According to latest reports, it indicates that if Rohit’s position as ODI captain comes under review, or if the selectors opt to reduce the workload on the 37-year-old, Hardik Pandya could be a strong contender for the role. The all-rounder has already gained valuable experience leading the team in white-ball formats over the past two years.

“Hardik has the knack for leading in high-pressure situations, and his experience as an all-rounder and leader makes him an ideal choice for an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy,” a source told MyKhel.

Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is last June after India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, with Suryakumar Yadav assuming the captaincy the following month. In Test cricket, Jasprit Bumrah, who previously guided India to a commanding victory in Perth, now appears set to take over as the national team’s leader in the longest format.

Sydney Test: Australia’s Mind Games Cause Gill’s Brain Fade

Published

on

Shubman Gill’s return to the Indian team didn’t go on expected lines as the batter perished playing a loose shot on Day 1 of the Sydney Test on Friday.

Gill’s bizarre dismissal was the big talking point of the morning session. The India No 3 had a war of words with Australians Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith before he shockingly gave spinner Nathan Lyon the charge off the last ball of the first session, which ended up in his strange dismissal.

Gill was dismissed for 20 to leave India reeling on 57/3 in 25 overs at lunch on the opening day.

Smith described how Australia’s mind games had disturbed Gill’s focus after he tried to slow down things towards the end of the session.

The India No 3 went down to tap the pitch before facing the last ball from Lyon. Smith, at slip, complained to the umpire as to why he was not getting on with his batting before he called out to tbe batter.

‘Easy, got it in easy! He needs to call for the ‘sprain,’ Labuschange was the first to get on Gill’s nerves.

Smith joined in quipping: ‘Oi, let’s play!’

Gill was not amused as he told Smith: ‘You take your time, Smithy nobody says anything.’

Smith was not holding back ‘Just play mate. Let’s play’ while Labuschagne added: ‘Take your time son.’

It was the Australians, who ended with the last laugh. Gill, who seemed upset at Smith, played a loose shot to gift his wicket away. He came down the pitch to defend the spinner but Lyon foxed him the slider which went straight on and took the edge with Smith taking a comfortable catch at slip.

‘Shubman was trying to take his time there, (and) it probably played into our hands. He actually said something to me like ‘I will take my time’ but he decided to run at the last ball and I think he was trying to launch him. That happens,’ Smith told commentator Isa Guha at the lunch break.

The manner of Gill’s dismissal won’t certainly impress Coach Gautam Gambhir, who had issued a stern warning to his team after losing the fourth Test in Melbourne.

The coach expressed dissatisfaction with players ‘doing their own thing in the name of their ‘natural game’, instead of playing according to the situation.’

Sydney Test: Bumrah’s Late Cameo Takes India To Decent 185 against disciplined Australian pacers

Published

on

Only the suspicion of what Jasprit Bumrah, the outstanding bowler of the series and Rohit’s replacement as captain, might do on the surface constrained the joy of home fans packed into the famous old ground.

They got a hint from the last ball of the three overs India managed to bowl at Australia before the close of play when Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja for 2.

Teenager Sam Konstas, unbeaten on seven, made it safely to stumps with Australia 9 for 1.

Australia lead the series 2-1 and will reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and a place in the World Test Championship final against South Africa with a victory in the finale

Rishabh Pant was the top run-getter for India as he played a 40-run knock. Jasprit Bumrah played a late cameo, making a crucial contribution of 22 runs on the back of three fours and a six to take India to a fighting total.

Boland precipitated the end of India’s laboured innings early in the final session when he had Rishabh Pant caught at mid-on for 40 off a miscued pull shot and dismissed Melbourne centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy off consecutive balls.

Washington Sundar was beaten by Boland’s hat-trick ball without making contact with it but Ravindra Jadeja was soon trapped plumb in front by Mitchell Starc (3-49) for 26 to leave India reeling on 134-7.

Sundar was unfortunate to depart for 14 when a TV review detected a brush of his glove on a Cummins delivery and Bumrah wagged the tail with 22 runs from 17 balls before the Australia skipper had him caught at mid-wicket to end the innings.

India could still retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a victory but looked on the back foot from the moment Bumrah won the toss and sent his team into bat.

Cummins said he would have done the same but the paceman was still licking his lips at the greenish tinge on the wicket and the leaden skies above Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

The tourists had 11 runs on the board when Rahul departed for four and only six more when Jaiswal, on 10, was caught in the slips by debutant Beau Webster from a Boland delivery that nipped back to the off side.

Boland thought he had Kohli out for a golden duck off the next delivery but the roars of the sellout crowd turned to jeers when the third umpire ruled the ball had kissed the grass as slip fielder Steve Smith flicked it up for Marnus Labuschagne to catch.

Cummins tossed the ball to Nathan Lyon for the last over before lunch and the spinner removed a charging Shubman Gill, Rohit’s batting replacement, for 20 with a thick edge into the busy slip cordon.

Virat Kohli, perhaps as out-of-sorts in his batting as Rohit, had scored 17 runs from 69 balls when he became Boland’s second victim with a stab at a delivery outside off which Webster collected with a fine diving catch in the slips.

Bumrah had earlier attempted to douse rumours of rifts in the India camp when he said Rohit’s absence from the team was the 37-year-old’s own choice.

“Our captain has shown leadership by opting to rest in this game,” he said at the toss.
