New Delhi: In a major development, the players’ salary cap for the Indian Premier League 2025 might be increased to 130-140Cr. Notably, the salary cap for the 2022 mega auction was INR 90Cr, which might be increased significantly ahead of the next season.
According to The Times of India report, several franchises have demanded an increase in the players’ salary cap.
“The current system doesn’t allow for a player’s salary to be increased by a franchise once he’s bought in the IPL auction. Suppose he’s bought for Rs 30 lakh and has an outstanding IPL, the franchise should have the option of offering him, say a Rs 3 crore fresh contract for the next year, rather than lose him to some other team,” a franchise official was quoted as saying by TOI.
The IPL needs to allow franchises to renegotiate the salary of a high-performing player. It will allow a team the option to retain its best players of the previous season without the worry that they would ask to be released or traded by other teams,” he added.
According to another report, some franchises want the mega auction cycle to be extended from three to five years as that allows them to build a team and develop young Indian uncapped players.
