With Jay Shah set to step down as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in November, Rohan Jaitley has emerged as the frontrunner to replace him.
In August this year, Shah was elected unopposed as the new ICC chairman. He will replace Greg Barclay as the next ICC chief. The BCCI secretary will be starting his stint as the ICC chairman from December 1. He became the youngest to be elected as the ICC chairman.
Jay Shah will become the fifth Indian to hold the prestigious post. The other Indians to ply their trade as the ICC chair are Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
Shah’s journey in cricket administration began in 2009 when he joined Gujarat Cricket Association. In 2019, he joined the BCCI as its secretary. Shah has played a key role in BCCI’s impressive functioning in recent years, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022, he was re-elected as the BCCI secretary.
With Jay Shah’s tenure as the BCCI secretary set to end in a few days, Rohan Jaitley and Anil Patel are in contention to replace him, according to a report in India Today.
Rohan Jaitley is currently the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) while Patel is the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association.
The report stated that no Special General Meeting (SGM) will be called to discuss the next secretary’s appointment. The news outlet also claimed that Rohan Jaitley is the favorite to replace Jay Shah.
Jaitley’s stint at the DDCA began around four years ago when he was elected as its president, a position his father Arun Jaitley held for 14 years. The appointment also marked his entry into cricket administration. Later, Jaitley was re-elected without any opposition.
He has received praise from several quarters for his work as the DDCA president. He oversaw the successful hosting of five ODI World Cup matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium last year. During his stint, the DDCA also launched the Delhi Premier League earlier this year.
