Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25: A nightmare for Shubhman Gill

Promising batsman Shubman Gill did not quite live up to the expectations in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series.

The right-hander failed to impress with the bat, unable to put up any significant performance.

He played three Tests and five innings, from which he managed to score just 93 runs with a high score of 31. Moreover, he had a poor average of just 18.60 throughout.

While he was dropped for the fourth Test, Rohit Sharma sat out for the fifth, which gave Gill another opportunity in Sydney. However, the batter failed to capitalize, with scores of 20 and 13 in both innings respectively.

Gill had an awful last three years overseas, had to make amends but he couldn’t.

In the last three years, Gill has averaged a mere 16.84 (219 runs in 13 innings) while batting in SENA countries. His numbers are extremely poor considering Pujara, who got replaced by Gill, has 244 runs at 24.4 in the same period in similar conditions.

Shubman Gill’s struggles in overseas conditions are overshadowed by the spotlight on Virat Kohli’s slump, but they warrant equal attention.

If Gill aspires to be a cornerstone of India’s batting lineup, he must adapt and deliver in challenging conditions. The comparisons to Tendulkar and Kohli will remain distant dreams unless Gill addresses his vulnerabilities and finds consistency beyond home soil.
